'Unfinished business' is Blakely's top motivation Marqusblkok

IMPORT Marqus Blakely believes he still has an unfinished business with San Mig Coffee which serves as his motivation in his second tour of duty with the team for the coming PBA Governors Cup.

The 6-foot-5 Blakely admitted images from last season’s Game Seven of the Finals against Rain or Shine are still fresh in his mind, including his disqualification on fouls in the middle of a searing Mixers rally that enabled the Elasto Painters to win a first ever league championship.

“You know, Game Seven. Not winning. It’s been that close, minutes away from winning the championship, but I fouled out and was not able to finish it (the game),” recalled Blakely, fresh from an NBA Summer League stint last week with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The high-flying Blakely said he expects another bumpy road to the championship, well-aware that all league teams have tapped equally solid imports capable of blending well with the locals.

“We’ll have a lot of tough games (this conference), but that will show our character and I think we’ll be ready,” said the Metuchen, New Jersey native.

Told that the Mixers will be facing the reigning champion E-Painters at the opening day of the season-ending tournament on August 14 in what could be a rematch of last year’s title series, Blakely said the Mixers will be ready for them.

“I heard of him (Rain or Shine import Arizona Reid) But I haven’t played against him though. The first game for sure, we’ll be ready as a team to go out there and play, compete against them. It’ll be a good test,” he added.

The 24-year-old Blakely underscored his readiness for the Governors Cup after scoring 21 points, including several highlight dunks in the second half, to lead the Mixers to a 75-65 win over the Bahrain national team Sunday afternoon at the Ronac gym in San Juan.

Blakely averaged 22.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.5 blocks in 41 minutes for San Mig last season.
