BASKETBALL Olsen Racela expects comebacking Danny Ildefonso to play major role for Petron
In their heyday with the San Miguel Beermen, Olsen Racela and Danny Ildefonso teamed up to win multiple championships for the franchise.
Racela has moved on to coach the team now known as the Petron Blaze Boosters, while Ildefonso has gone from being the team’s main man to a veteran leader recuperating from a serious shoulder injury.
Despite Ildefonso’s advancing age, his former teammate still has plenty of faith in the two-time PBA Most Valuable Player, who is expected to make his return for the Boosters in the Governors’ Cup.
“He will play the No. 4 spot, sometimes the center position,” Racela told InterAKTV in a telephone interview.
Ildefonso missed majority of the first two conferences after undergoing surgery for his injury. Despite his ailment, he remained a valuable contributor for the team, tutoring rookie big man June Mar Fajardo.
With a long break before the start of the next tournament, Ildefonso has gotten plenty of time to recuperate.
Racela said Ildefonso has started joining the team’s practices, and expects that the veteran slotman can join full-contact scrimmages by July.
A Fajardo-Ildefonso combination, according to Racela, is not out of the question.
“Yes, that’s a big possibility,” said Racela, referring to the Fajardo-Ildefonso combo up front. “We also got a versatile import (Elijah Millsap) who can play both forward spots and we also have Arwind Santos as well as Jason Deutchman who are capable of playing the No. 4 spot, At least we’ve maintained flexibility in our frontline.”
