Chot Reyes
The Gilas Pilipinas basketball team hopes to be 90 percent ready for the FIBA-Asia Championship slated next month after its 10-day training camp in New Zealand.

Mentored by Chot Reyes, Gilas is leaving no unturned to be at par with the best in Asia as the Nationals – and their backers – are determined to compete in the World Championship slated next year in Spain.

By playing against tall and experienced New Zealand teams, including its national team, Reyes is hoping his players will gain the necessary toughness and maturity they need to finish in the top three of the biennial event.

“It’s going to be an intense training as we’re in the final phase of our preparation for the Asian Championship,” Gilas Pilipinas team manager Butch Antonio told the Bulletin yesterday in a phone interview.

The team holds its last practice today before leaving for New Zealand tomorrow.

Reyes is also expected to use the first day of training as his basis for naming the 12 players that will carry the country’s colors when the tournament starts on Aug. 1 at the Mall of Asia.

“The games will be very important, because that’s where the coaches will know where we need to improve. There are still several things that we have to improve, but we’re getting there, we’re doing ok as far as preparation,” said Antonio.

“I can’t say if we’re under prepared or over prepared, but we’re making progress. That’s why playing together will be important,” added Antonio.

Last month, the national team had its training camp in Lithuania under coach Kestutis Kemzura, the one-time mentor of the Lithuanian national team. Gilas Pilipinas also played a total of seven games, and finished with a 5-2 record.
