Barako sets backup plan as Jeffers remains unavailable

SHOULD plans to hire NBA veteran forward Othyus Jeffers fail to materialize, Barako Bull active consultant Rajko Toroman said the team has Alex Acker or Michael Singletary under its radar for the PBA Governors Cup.

Jeffers, listed at 6-foot-5, had NBA stints with the Utah Jazz, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Washington Wizards the past years and is high on Toroman’s list for the season-ending conference.

But with the former Robert Morris University alumnus still unavailable as he sees action in the NBA Summer League, the Barako Bull official said they may have to consider a backup import.

“We have Mike Singletary and Alex Acker in our radar,” Toroman said. “Alex can play the 2 and 3 positions. He’s good and a really excellent shooter.”

If negotiations to bring Jeffers into the team fall, Toroman feels Acker can also be a big boost for the Energy Cola, who are still looking for a solid perimeter threat.

The 6-foot-5 Acker, the 60th pick overall in the 2005 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons, has toiled in the European basketball leagues over the last six years. He has played in Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Poland since 2007.

He also played a total of 30 NBA games with the Pistons and the Los Angeles Clippers, where he averaged 2.7 points and 1.0 rebound in 7.8 minutes of play.

Singletary has suited up for Barako Bull, helping the team to a fourth place finish in the 2nd Al Shabab Basketball Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Barako Bull finished ninth place in the Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup this season. Toroman said they are eyeing no less than a quarterfinal stint for the Governors Cup, where the import’s height limit is 6-foot-5.
