Nets interested in free agent center Jason Collins

The Brooklyn Nets are interested in signing free-agent center Jason Collins, Yahoo! Sports reported Friday.

Collins, the first openly gay player in NBA history, played for the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards last season.

He revealed in May that he is a homosexual.

Collins, 34, was a teammate of new Nets coach Jason Kidd and played under then-coach Lawrence Frank for seven seasons. Frank is now an assistant under Kidd.

The Nets acquired Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry in a blockbuster trade Thursday that cannot be completed until July 10. Collins could fill a backup role and is a proven front court defender.

Collins was a teammate of Garnett and Pierce last season for the Celtics. Garnett was reportedly upset when Collins was traded to the Wizards in February.

The Nets also plan to re-sign backup center Andray Blatche. Center Brook Lopez and power forward Garnett will start in the front court.

Collins was taken 18th overall in the 2001 draft. He has played for the Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Celtics and Wizards.
