Sports5's new broadcast proposal puts PBA in Sunday showdown with UAAP games Gilaschot9

EARLY-afternoon games during Sundays and the delayed broadcast of the first game of weekday double-headers over TV5 will be regular fare if the PBA approves the latest proposal of Sports5 on the broadcast of the pro league's games.

Under the terms of the latest Sports5 proposal to be voted upon by the league board on Thursday, Sunday double-headers will have the first game kicking off at 2:30 p.m. instead of the usual 4:15 p.m. start, with the second match to begin at 4:45 p.m.

If approved by the board, the new Sunday broadcast schedule will put the pro league in direct competition with the UAAP, which also holds its Sunday games at around the same time slot.

The two Sunday games will be carried live both by TV5 and its sister channel on the UHF band, Aksyon TV, the league's television partner assured in a proposal forwarded to the board.

Sports5 had earlier proposed to hold Sunday games beginning at 2 p.m. in a move that was immediately shot down by the board - the reason the TV coveror came up with a 2:30 p.m. start time in a second proposal handed to the PBA board last June 19.

The broadcast set-up, however, will be different during weekdays as TV5 is having a difficult time inserting the games' broadcast into the channel's already loaded primetime programming after ending its blocktime agreement with IBC 13.

Although all matches will be carried live by Aksyon TV, Sports5 has to throw in parallel broadcasts on TV5 to convince the board to agree to its new programming set-up.

As per the proposal, the start of Wednesday and Friday double-headers will be delayed by 30 minutes - the first game to be played at 5:45 p.m. and the second game at 8 p.m.

Sports5 has proposed to broadcast the second game live over TV5 with the first game of the double-header shown on a delayed basis beginning at 10:30 p.m. after the late-night news. Both games will also be shown live over Aksyon TV Channel 41.

If the league decides to hold double-headers in Manila on Saturdays, the first game will begin at 2:30 p.m. and the second game at 4:45 p.m., although it will only be the first game that will be shown live by TV5, with the second game to be shown at 10:30 p.m.

In an earlier interview with Spin.ph, Sports5 head Chot Reyes insisted their proposal offers more positives than negatives.

“Dadagdagan pa nga namin ng TV5 coverage 'yung second game. Tapos may delayed telecast `yung first game. So puro dagdag ito. I think it’s a very good situation,” Reyes said.

Reyes also assured the public of a better signal for Aksyon TV once improvement work on their equipment and transmitter is completed.

“Right now, mas malawak ang reach ng IBC. Right now. Pero ini-improve na `yung Aksyon TV since the start of the year pa,” said Reyes. “Kaya by the time na mag-open `yung PBA sa August, mas malawak na ang reach ng Aksyon TV sa IBC-13.

“Hindi mo kailangan ng cable, it’s on free TV.”

Reyes is again expected to lead the Sports5 presentation before the PBA board.
