UAAP board set to discuss repercussions of new rookie age limit, PBA draft sked

HE UAAP board is set to discuss its rules on players moving on to the professional ranks in light of a new PBA rule lowering the age limit for rookie prospects from 23 to 21 and a schedule change that will see the draft being moved back from August to November.

A highly-ranked official said that the UAAP board may tackle the issue as early as the next board meeting to clear the issue for players who might want to immediately jump to the professional ranks after this collegiate season.

Under UAAP rules, a collegiate player should wait for another year before entering the PBA draft, which in the past was usually held in August. The rule was instituted so that the athlete can focus on his academics as well as his school team.

This year, however, could pose a possible debate as to the interpretation of the rule since the next PBA draft will be held this November after the third conference of the 2012-2013 season was moved to August to give way to Gilas Pilipinas’ preparation in the 2013 Fiba-Asia Championships.

As it stands now, the PBA draft will be held a month after the end of the UAAP basketball finals.

Among the collegiate stars considered as top candidates for the pros is two-time reigning Most Valuable Player Bobby Ray Parks, although the 20-year-old may still be ineligible. The third-year National University star had said earlier that he is still weighing his options.

Far Eastern University guard RR Garcia could also be a potential PBA draftee as he is in his fifth and final year with the Tamaraws. He is currently part of the Gilas Pilipinas cadet squad.

The PBA this week announced that it is now accepting draft applicants who will turn 21 by the start of the new season set in late November.
