Globalport Star diagnosed with tear
Globalport point guard Sol Mercado may miss at least six months if surgery is performed on his shoulder which was found to have a tear in the labrum, head coach Junel Baculi said yesterday.
Baculi said they will seek a second opinion to avoid surgery which may cause Mercado to miss the rest of the season and part of the 2013 season.
“It is standard procedure, to have a second opinion,” said Baculi.
The result will be known in the next few days, Baculi said.
“Of course, we want the best for Sol… he’s our top point guard, probably one of the best in the league right now. His career is on the line here,” he said.
He and team owner Mikee Romero will be discussing the steps they intend to take once a final decision is made on Mercado.
It was last Monday when team doctors found out a tear on the shoulder of the 5-foot-11 Mercado following a team practice session.
A surgery and then rehab will take at least six months, and that will make the former Biola University unavailable in the third conference this season and probably in the Philippine Cup.
Baculi said they are looking at their options in the event that Mercado undergoes surgery.
With Mercado out, the back court will be under the care of third year guard Rudy Lingganay and Fil-American rookie AJ Mandani.
The team is also assessing former Cebuana Lhuillier’s JR Buensuceso who is trying out for the squad. The onetime Brigham Young-Hawaii stalwart was chosen by Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the fifth round in last year’s PBA Rookie Draft but was not signed, which makes him a free agent.
